Oscar Chalupsky is the South African canoeing world champion and also served as the captain of the South African Olympic team. In 2019, he was diagnosed with high-risk multiple myeloma. Since then, he has received multiple lines of treatment including autologous stem cell transplantation, targeted drugs, and clinical trials in South Africa, Portugal, and Germany, but the disease continued to progress.

At the suggestion of a friend, he used tools such as ChatGPT and DeepSeek to learn about hematology department resources, and then sent an email to the External Cooperation Department and International Medical Department of Ruijin Hospital in November 2025. The hospital organized remote discussions with experts from the Department of Hematology and Critical Care Medicine, and believed that the possibility of new cellular immunotherapy could be further evaluated.
Examination and evaluation after coming to China
On December 9, Oscar arrived in Shanghai and was admitted to Ruijin Hospital. Reports recorded that he completed PET-MR, bone marrow biopsy and T-cell function tests within three days. The focus at this stage is to clarify the physical condition, disease burden and subsequent treatment conditions, rather than directly performing CAR-T infusion upon arrival.
Which stage has the report recorded
As of the publication of this report, the Ruijin team is in communication with his South African attending doctor to prepare for subsequent treatment. He himself also publicly shared his experience of being evaluated and preparing for CAR-T in China. This report has not yet given a conclusion on the efficacy after reinfusion, so the actual medical treatment and evaluation process will be retained here.
