Natalia developed abdominal pain and weight loss, and tests revealed a duodenal malignancy involving the pancreas and compressing the inferior vena cava. Her son, who teaches in Shanghai, contacted Dr. Zhao Liangchao of the General Surgery Department of the Northern Campus of Ruijin Hospital in December 2025 to consult for further treatment.
Determine the possibility of surgery first
The imaging showed that the tumor was about nine centimeters, and the team determined whether there was an opportunity for surgery based on the involvement of important blood vessels. The patient then traveled to China, a journey of about thirty hours. Cross-border surgeries require that the condition be as clear as possible before arrival and that further assessment be completed upon arrival.
Language communication and complex surgery
The patient did not speak Chinese or English, but was able to speak French. The team used French communication and translation assistance to communicate about the condition and surgical risks. After completing the evaluation, doctors perform a pancreaticoduodenectomy to deal with complex lesions involving multiple organs and reconstruction links.
Postoperative recovery and follow-up treatment
Reports recorded that the patient recovered after surgery and his family members expressed their gratitude to the medical team. Tumor treatment and follow-up still need to be continued after surgery. The experience presents the interface between imaging evaluation, cross-language communication, complex surgical treatment and follow-up diagnosis and treatment.
